LWV-CC Position
Homelessness and Affordable Housing
2024
Homelessness is a complex problem that requires multifaceted solutions and broad community involvement. LWV-CC encourages expanding, strengthening, and increasing coordination of the existing systems and supports, including:
- Prevention programs that reduce the chance of individuals falling into poverty and becoming homeless.
- Expanding the inventory of affordable housing options by enacting local policies and programs that encourage development of such options.
- Rapid rehousing services where organizations bring homeless people into shelters, arrange housing, and provide support services.
- Permanent housing for chronically homeless individuals without requirements such as sobriety, treatment, or service participation.
- Services to care for homeless individuals living on the streets, including follow-up contacts.
- An emergency overnight shelter to serve the homeless in Collin County.
- Expand support for foster care homes available to homeless youth.
